About the Project

The aims of the Developing a Redemptive Identity project is to explore the key internal and external factors that contribute to the resilience of individuals in reentry. By focusing on those who successfully navigate life post-incarceration, the project aims to uncover protective elements that foster long-term desistance, paving the way for more effective interventions that support individuals' transformation and reintegration into society. This research is a critical step toward strengthening the foundation for sustainable change.

Identifying Resilience: A Path to Reentry Success

The majority of post-incarceration research is devoted to identifying predictors of recidivism for the nearly two-thirds (i.e., 68-77%) of individuals who return to carceral settings. Yet, far less is known about mechanisms of resilience for the approximately 17% who successfully desist. The goal of this mixed-methods pilot study is to identify internal and external resilience factors that build resilience and promote desistance among formerly incarcerated individuals. Findings from this research will serve as an important focal point for future intervention development dedicated to fostering resilience, individually and relationally, for those finding their way home after incarceration.

From Incarceration to Inspiration: Chef Jeff's Journey (Chef Jeff and Stacy Womack Henderson's Story)

Chef Jeff Henderson’s remarkable journey from incarceration to becoming a renowned chef and mentor embodies the transformative power of resilience and second chances. After serving time in federal prison,

Jeff reinvented his life, becoming a beacon of hope for those seeking to overcome adversity. His personal story fuels this project, where he and his wife, Stacy, work together to help individuals successfully reintegrate into society. His dedication to encouraging positive change and empowering others through mentorship and culinary expertise drives the mission of this study.

Stacy Womack-Henderson, a respected life coach and mentor, and Chef Jeff Henderson, a passionate and talented chef, make for an incredible team. Their inspiring journey together began while Jeff was incarcerated in federal prison and quickly evolved into the creation of a beautiful family together, including five children. An inspirational couple married over 21 years, Jeff and Stacy are champions of change and positivity in the world by way of their deep devotion to such causes as overcoming adversity, marriage, and family. Together they encourage self-empowerment, and childhood development. Their combined wealth of knowledge empowers individuals to achieve life-changing transformation. The Foundation is proud to have the Henderson’s as Honoree Trustees and our work with them on the project.

Your Support Makes it Possible

The initial funding for this project, from by FAHS, formerly AAMFT Research and Education Foundation, provided the foundation necessary to explore and strengthen the protective factors that lead to successful reentry for formerly incarcerated individuals. Through the support of our generous donors, we are able to move forward with this critical research that will ultimately foster resilience and long-term success. Your contribution fuels the progress we’ve made so far and helps to meet our ongoing goals.

Meet Our Champion for Change (A Spotlight for Dr. Amy Morgan, PhD, LMFT)

Dr. Amy Morgan, PhD, LMFT, a respected scholar from the University of Maryland, is at the helm of this pioneering research. Dr. Morgan's extensive expertise in post-incarceration resiliency and  mixed-methods research drives the focus of this study. Dr. Morgan's commitment to understanding the complex factors behind successful reentry and her dedication to creating real-world solutions  for reentry populations make her an invaluable leader in this work. Dr. Morgan's research is integral to uncovering the pathways to desistance and ultimately creating systemic change.
Through her innovative approach, Dr. Morgan is not only advancing academic knowledge but also shaping practical interventions that empower individuals and communities. Her leadership fosters collaboration among scholars, policymakers, and practitioners, ensuring that this work has a broad and lasting impact on reentry systems.
